Google Maps has great new features like the immersive 3D view!

This Wednesday, July 27, 2022, Google launched three new options on its online mapping service. These are the immersive 3D view, updated bike navigation, and updated sharing notifications. As you can imagine, the most interesting novelty is certainly the immersive 3D view which is strongly reminiscent of the hover function of Apple Maps.

Indeed, the new feature of Google Maps now adds to the service, photorealistic aerial views of nearly 100 famous sites around the world. There are landmarks in cities like London, Barcelona, San Francisco, New York and Tokyo. Aerial views of famous sites like Big Ben, Alcatraz or the Empire State Building are also available.

Google said aerial views are available to all users, regardless of where they are in the world. To enjoy it, just locate one of the 100 landmarks in Google Maps and then go to the Photos section.

The feature uses a successful association between artificial intelligence and a bank made up of billions of images. It aims to serve as a preview tool for tourists while allowing them to satisfy their curiosity without the need to physically move. The aerial views are also part of Google’s immersive 3D view project, which is not yet available as such. What Google launched on Wednesday can be seen as just a preview. The aerial views are the first step in launching this option that the Mountain View company presented at the Google I/O conference.

According to information revealed by a blog post by Amanda Leicht Moore, product director at Google Maps, the immersive view will offer other information besides aerial views. These include interior views and traffic information as well as the weather following the confidences made to The Verge by Genevieve Park, the spokeswoman for Google.

In its planning, Google wants to deploy the immersive view in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo this year. Thereafter, it will gradually extend it to other major cities on the planet.

The other two interesting features launched by Google

If the immersive 3d view is not complete at the moment, the updates to the bike navigation and sharing notifications on the other hand are fully operational.

The improved version of Maps bike navigation has added more detail regarding heavy car traffic, stairs, steep hills and road types. It also makes it easier to compare routes and will be available in hundreds of cities in the coming weeks.

For its part, the improved version of sharing notifications lets you know when a friend leaves or arrives in a given place. But for this to work, the users concerned must first agree to share their location. To reassure its world, Google has promised to set up notifications by application and by e-mail in order to prevent users from leaving sharing activated for too long.
