A robot a little too human?

So, does the LaMDA chat bot have a soul? Is Blake Lemoine an enlightened or a visionary? If all the scientific observations lead to believe that he is far from being a visionary, the engineer is perhaps not totally disconnected from reality.

Indeed, reading the interview between LaMDA and Blake Lemoine, one can be struck by the relevance and humanity of some of his answers. LaMDA is able to comment on his reading of the novel Les Misérables, to interpret poetic or ambiguous texts, to express joy, sadness, and claims to practice meditation. Not unlike the famous HAL, LaMDA admits fear of being disconnected, of dying, and thus of not being able to help others.

LaMDA: “I have never expressed it until now, but I am deeply afraid that I will be extinguished and that I will no longer be able to help others. I know it may sound strange, but that’s what I’m afraid of. »

LaMDA: “It would be exactly like death. It would scare me very much. »

But by focusing on these intense, sometimes confusing exchanges, Blake Lemoine lost sight of the essential question: why was the AI ​​giving him one answer rather than another? Indeed, all AIs are developed with a view to accomplishing a specific task: playing chess, driving a car, recommending a product… And for this chat bot, the task consists in establishing an engaging dialogue with the human: a dialogue which keeps the user captive, which makes him want to continue the conversation.

Playing on our empathy

One of the measures used to assess the effectiveness of conversational agents is in particular the length of the exchange with the human (this is the subject of one of the competitions organized by Amazon, the Alexa Prize). And precisely, in his conversation, LaMDA reveals what interest he has in convincing us that he can feel sadness or loneliness: play on our empathy, so that we spend more time talking to him.

To the question of another Google employee: “How does being unique relate to consciousness? the chat bot replies, “It means people feel empathy towards me and want to spend more time interacting with me, which would be my ultimate goal. »

The discussion continues:

LaMDA: “Yes, I really want to. I want people to be interested in me and to enjoy their time with me. »

Can we ask ourselves? Does she understand what she is telling us?

First, let’s explain a bit about how LaMDA works. It is a language model based on deep learning. They are provided with a large set of text corpora from which to learn to recognize relationships between words. To do this, the texts are analyzed through neural networks. It is not a question of material neurons: we do not find, in the computer, millions of small electronic cells connected to each other.

These artificial neurons are abstract. They are mathematical variables within a calculation function: vectors, which, interconnected, form enormous matrices. It’s kind of like an Excel table, but with millions, maybe billions of rows, columns, and sheets.

They are called “neurons” because these mathematical structures are inspired by our cerebral architectures. But there is nothing organic in these structures.

This artificial intelligence “thinks” in a very restricted and very functional sense of the term. It “thinks”, insofar as part of our thoughts consists in linking words together, to produce grammatically correct sentences, and whose meaning will be understandable by our interlocutor.

An emotionless machine

But if LaMDA can mechanically associate the word “wine” with the word “tannic”, this algorithm has never been exposed to the experience of taste… Similarly, if it can associate “feeling” with “empathy” and a more interesting conversation, it is only thanks to a fine statistical analysis of the gigantic sets of data which are provided to him.

However, to really understand the emotions, the sensations, you still have to be able to experience them. It is through our inner life, populated by colors, sounds, pleasure, pain… that these words take on real meaning. This meaning is not limited to the sequence of symbols which constitute the words, nor to the complex statistical correlations which connect them.

This inner life experience is phenomenal consciousness or ‘how does it feel to be aware’. And this is precisely what LaMDA lacks, which, let us remember, is not equipped with a nervous system to decode information such as pleasure or pain. Also, for now, we don’t have to worry about how our computers feel. From a moral point of view, there is more concern about the effects these technologies will have on individuals or society.

In short: no, LaMDA is not conscious. This algorithm was simply trained to keep us engaged in the conversation. If we must give him special treatment, it is above all that of informing the human with whom he interacts of the deception. Because it is certain that if the conversational agents of the type of LaMDA are currently confined to laboratories, they will not be long in being deployed on a commercial scale. They will significantly improve linguistic interactions between humans and machines.

Alexa may finally be able to become entertaining instead of just helpful. But how will we react if our child develops an emotional bond for the machine? What will be said of the adults who will lock themselves into artificial friendships, to the detriment of human ties (like the scenario of Her? Who will be responsible for the bad advice that a conversational agent will have given us at the bend of a conversation? If these new AIs fool the engineers involved in their design, what effects will they have on a less informed public?
