The practice of motorhomes extends to new categories of enthusiasts who do not necessarily know about the subtleties of insurance specific to this mode of leisure. On the other hand, insurance is marketed through a multitude of channels: companies, mutuals, brokers, associations, etc.
It’s not easy to find your way around, especially since the world of insurance is not the easiest to approach, with its multiple and variable guarantees, its options contracts… And the contracts tend to look alike. Among the offers, you will find third party insurance, extended third party and comprehensive cover, with variations in terms of guarantees.
The contracts differ from those offered for traditional vehicles because the reimbursements granted will prove to be greater and the protection of the personal effects and equipment of the vehicle is more important. The specificity of the motorhome also imposes certain restrictions.
According to the insurers, the speed on the highway can be limited and a minimum age required (25 years and 3 years of license). This security automatically excludes young drivers and reduces the statistical risk of claims related to inexperience.
Which interlocutor to choose?
You can ask the insurer of your passenger vehicle and check that the company offers this type of guarantee; you can also turn to mutuals such as Matmut, which also covers large motorhomes subject to an in-depth study, or MFA, whose coverage occurs in the area of countries registered on the European green card.
Some brokers are recognized in the world of motorhomes such as AMV, FGP assurances, Quattro… Among the associations, the FFCC (French Federation of Campers, Caravanners and Motorhome Owners) has an offer in partnership with the insurer Allianz: the guarantee equipment is unlimited and included in the declared value of the motorhome, assistance extended to the payment of customs taxes payable by certain countries and up to 50% of the new value of the vehicle, SOS puncture, glass breakage without deductible , personalized kilometer insurance, etc.
Points to check in your quote
A few points deserve your attention when the insurer has established the quote; to do before committing, of course. Check the precise list of what is covered (vehicle, broken glass, extended or not, miscellaneous equipment, contents of the motorhome, geographical areas concerned or excluded, etc.), but also:
- the damage guarantee,
- the level of the breakdown assistance guarantee (0 km, reimbursement ceiling, etc.)
- the possible extensions to select according to your real needs
- the modulations of guarantees according to the use of the vehicle (according to the number of kilometers usually travelled, its prolonged parking excluding travel, etc.)
- assistance and its components (vehicle, repatriation, legal aid, etc.)
- the duration of the reimbursement at the value of the new vehicle…
