In Toulouse, the ATPA-SPA shelter – faced with an unprecedented wave of animal abandonment – announces that it is quite simply saturated.

” Emergency “

The message on social media couldn’t be clearer. ” Emergency refuge saturated“, is it written, before other words, just as revolting. “After a wave of abandonments this summer, the shelter is packed. Help us save them, come and adopt ! “A call also taken up by Francoise Ampoulange, municipal councilor in charge of energy renovation and animals in town. “I am relaying the call from the ATPA-SPA refuge in Toulouse. Do you want to buy an animal? Think of them,” she says.

“It’s dramatic, unheard of”

In this refuge, which is completely independent of the SPA, hence the name ATPA (for Association Toulousaine pour la Protection Animale, declared in 1924), the last few weeks have been sadly historic. Vice-president of the association, Anne-Marie Aubert uses these alarming words: ” It’s dramatic, this is unheard of for years”.

Dogs and cats were welcomed… but not only. Goats, rabbits, pigs: the enclosure located at impasse Marie Laurencin has seen ” 935 animals arrive between 1er May and September 15, 2022. It is double to triple compared to other years, ”laments the vice-president of the ATPA-SPA of the Pink City. Whose refuge is currently home to more than 400 animals.

“There were dramatic abandonments. In August, a person who no longer wanted his dog, asked his father to carry him to the gate of the shelter, but he hung him up to that of a house, with the muzzle. After three days of suffering, the dog died. It happened close to our house, and it is an abandonment that is unspeakable, unforgivable. It is not possible at all.

A waiting list

How to find a solution? “We cannot push the walls of the refuge, sighs Anne-Marie Aubert. We are trying to find host families. So far it has worked well. But we have a waiting list of families who call us saying they can’t keep their animal. We discuss with them the reasons why they want to abandon their animal. If it is dramatic, we try to find a solution. If it can wait, we take their number and ask them to wait. »

But the vice-president recalls the complexity in which the mission of the ATPA-SPA of Toulouse is engaged. “Right now, we can’t take it anymore. Worried, we all are at the shelter. But we are against euthanasia, there is no question of euthanizing animals to make room. »

Hope remains

If the numbers are chilling and what follows promises to be particularly difficult to face, it is, again, forbidden to give up. ” We stay with hope, because what we do, we believe in. We have staff who are volunteers,” says Anne-Marie Aubert. On the occasion of the “Seniors and +” village, place du Capitole, it will hold a stand for the ATPA-SPA, Wednesday, September 21, 2022. “I hope there will be word of mouth for people to come and adopt animals. »
