Joe Lacob’s strategy paid off!

In February 2020, when the Warriors were stuck in a nightmare season, Kevin Durant had left and Klay Thompson seriously injured, Joe Lacob was nevertheless optimistic. This complicated year was ideal, according to him, to prepare for the future.

“What’s great is that we can redesign the next dynasty”he announced. “I think it’s a good year for us to take stock and try to recreate something. »

The owner was not wrong since 28 months later, the Warriors are again at the top. A historic rebound which is explained by a strong choice: to bring in Andrew Wiggins with his big salary and his sometimes average performance, to associate him with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson (when he would be back) and Draymond Green.

“I said it on the first day, and Steve Kerr too: he is the prototype of a winger who did not play in a good team, who was not in the right culture”explains Joe Lacob to The Athletic. “We felt that if he came to us, he would be excellent. He didn’t need to be the star. We saw his playoffs, he was really remarkable. »

Golden State didn’t want to part ways with Andrew Wiggins or his two 2021 draft picks to reclaim a superstar. The leaders believed that the “Splash Brothers” and Draymond Green, aided by the former Wolves winger, still had the level to climb the mountain again.

“Some have doubted them”insists the owner. “But these guys aren’t 40 years old. We believe in this nucleus, made up of four players. Many would say three, but there are four and we spent money on it. Then we circled them. It was said that we had to take an additional star. But who ? Who was available and could have made the difference? We wanted to help these young people progress and grow with our managers. They learned. Thanks to that, we will be even better in the years to come. »

“When you think you have a chance to go far, to aim for the title, you have to try everything, use every dollar”

With James Wiseman, Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga and even Moses Moody, the future of the franchise is assured. And his present is in the expert hands of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. Golden State’s medium and long-term strategy therefore seems perfectly in place.

Despite criticism from some franchises for the amount spent.

“We wouldn’t have spent this money on this squad if we didn’t think we had a chance of winning”says Joe Lacob. “When you think you have a chance to go far, to aim for the title, you have to try everything, use every dollar. I imagine a lot of teams can’t or won’t do that. We have big incomes, the business aspect is good, so we can spend a little more. But without a title shot, you can’t afford to have such a payroll. »

And like Bob Myers, the GM of the franchise, before him, Joe Lacob is hilarious when he is told that the Warriors would have “bought” their title with millions of dollars…

“Honestly… It’s a joke. It’s ridiculous. Our players, except for Wiggins, are either drafted or paid minimum wage. How can we then say that we are buying our stock? That’s crazy. »
