Appropriation of the territory
Teritorio supports around twenty territories, mainly in New Aquitaine. The company, co-founded and chaired by Stéphane Branquart, has captured the interest of local authorities in rediscovering their territories and the specificities that make them up. Also, it is logical that Michaël Gelly, director of the Tartas tourist office, turned to Stéphane Branquart. “Our core business is tourist information, but more and more people are looking for information online. We realized that tourists needed detailed and spatialized information. So, on the model of what was done in Seignanx with Jérôme Lay, we started our menu,” explains the director.
If the tool seems oversized on the scale of the Tarusate Country alone, it does save valuable time. From now on, the tourist office is equipped with a touch pad which allows you to consult the map. “When people are looking for something, they go to the tablet or call us and we can send them a summary of their searches by email, with a logbook that includes all the information, from the location to the telephone number. We save time,” emphasizes Thomas, an employee of the tourist office.
The map data is collected in particular thanks to local contributors to their tourism sector. “But not only. We also have contributors from real estate agencies, town halls who may have information that we do not have and who will bring up data that will be useful to customers, ”explains the director of the tourist office. Also, industrial sites very present in the region. “Just in the name of our map, we show that our data silos can be reused by all the tourist offices concerned by the heart of the Landes”, explains the director.
“It is a shared garden that we cultivate”
Faced with the growing challenge around data sovereignty, projects like the one carried out by Teritorio and the Tartas tourist office can serve as a compass. Stéphane Branquart explains: “Google collects a lot of information about you when you access its services. With Open Street Map, everything is anonymized. We are Google Out. This means that the data comes from OSM or is free data from the tourist information system. The address search is also done through the national address database, the BAN, which is a State service. Even the statistics go through Matomo (web analysis platform, editor’s note), so as to respect people’s privacy. This will be a growing data challenge in the future. »
However, Stéphane Branquart and Michaël Gelly know that the fight against the American giant is futile. “What is interesting is to acquire a qualitative intelligence tool, with finer data than that of Google, which does not list washhouses, for example; to make a map and an application for locals, who will use it because it best represents their territories. The hosts and service providers will present a QR Code which refers to our card”, decrypts Michaël Gelly. “On Google, there are no public toilets, remarkable trees, picnic tables, water points, etc. We make short circuit, with data produced and consumed locally through the receptives, which welcome. On the scale of the Landes, the mechanism is indeed there. It’s a shared garden that we cultivate,” concludes Stéphane Branquart. And which will be tested this summer.
OSM is a free project, a digital commons. More than a simple mapping tool, it brings together data that can be used and modified by everyone, free of charge. OpenStreetMap is a database, an alternative to Google Maps, with finer and more reliable local data. Every day, the project receives over two million edits or data inputs. Wanting to be collaborative and participative, OSM is now used by many local authorities, as well as by well-known companies, such as the SNCF.
